With the arrival of Journey Together in March, we’ll have a handful of new decks joining the fray. As always, some decks are better than others—some are meme tier and some are merely playable, fun decks without much competitive promise. Lists below are very rough drafts and are intended as a starting place for testing, not as tournament-ready deck lists. Consider creating and using proxies to test cards you don’t already own prior to making any purchases.

All Archetypes Worth Considering After Rotation

Festival Grounds

BASIC STRATEGY

Play down and evolve Grookey and Applin into Thwackey and Dipplin, respectively. With the Festival Grounds stadium card in play, attack with Dipplin’s Do the Wave attack, which does 20 damage for each of your Benched Pokémon. Then, because of the effect of Dipplin’s Festival Lead Ability, attack once again before your opponent starts their turn. With Dipplin in the Active Spot, make use of Thwackey’s Boom Boom Groove Ability, which lets you search your deck for any 1 card if your Active Pokémon has the Festival Lead Ability.

Ceruledge ex

BASIC STRATEGY

Quickly use the deck’s resources like Squawkabilly ex, Carmine, Professor’s Research, and Cycling Road to get Energy into the discard pile to increase the damage output of Ceruledge ex’s primary attack, Abyssal Flames, which does 30 damage plus 20 more damage for each Energy card in your discard pile.

Froslass / Munkidori

BASIC STRATEGY

Pile damage counters on Pokémon in play with Abilities, except for Froslass, with Froslass’ Freezing Shroud Ability which reads, “During Pokémon Checkup, put 1 damage counter on each Pokémon that has an Ability (both yours and your opponent's), except any Froslass.” Use Munkidori’s Adrena-Brain Ability (Once during your turn, if this Pokémon has any [D] Energy attached, you may move up to 3 damage counters from 1 of your Pokémon to 1 of your opponent's Pokémon.) to move generated damage counters off your Pokémon onto your opponent’s Pokémon, gradually spreading damage on their board. As necessary, use Hisuian Arcanine or Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex to finish up knockouts.

BASIC STRATEGY

Evolve Gible into Garchomp ex via Rare Candy and attack using Garchomp ex’s Hydro Lander attack which does 160 damage and lets you accelerate 3 Fighting Energy to your Benched Pokémon in any way you like. Alternatively, attack with Groudon and its Magma Purge attack or Bloodmoon Ursaluna and its Mad Bite attack, which does 100 damage plus 30 more damage for each damage counter on your opponent's Active Pokémon.

BASIC STRATEGY

Play down and evolve Frigibax into Baxcalibur to make use of Baxcalibur’s Super Cold Ability, which reads, “As often as you like during your turn, you may attach a [W] Energy card from your hand to 1 of your Pokémon.” Flood your board with Water Energy, pulling Energy from your deck with Chien-Pao’s Shivery Chill Ability, which reads, “Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, you may search your deck for up to 2 basic [W] Energy cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.” Use Chien Pao’s Hail Blade, which does 60 damage for each [W] Energy you discard from your Pokémon, to take Knock Outs.

Miraidon ex

BASIC STRATEGY

Set up with the assistance of Miraidon ex’s Tandem Unit Ability. Accelerate energy into play via Electric Generator. Attack using Miraidon ex’s Photon Blaster attack, which does 220 damage and prevents Miraidon ex from attacking next turn. Go after more vulnerable Pokémon with Iron Hands ex and its Amp You Very Much attack, which does 120 damage and lets you take an additional Prize Card when taking a knockout.

Flygon ex

BASIC STRATEGY

Evolve up Trapinch into Flygon ex and Pidgey into Pidgeot ex via regular evolution through the State 1 line or, ideally, via Rare Candy. Attack with Flygon ex’s Reversing Storm attack which does 130 damage and gives you the option to switch in 1 of your Benched Pokémon to the Active Spot. Switch in common walling Pokémon like Mimikyu, which blocks Pokémon ex or Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon ex, which blocks Pokémon with an Ability. Use Flygon ex’s Sonic Peridot, which reads, “This attack does 100 damage to each of your opponent's Pokémon ex and Pokémon V. This attack's damage isn't affected by Weakness or Resistance.” as needed.

Hydreigon ex

BASIC STRATEGY

Evolve Deino up into Hydreigon ex and use its Crashing Headbutt attack to do 200 damage to your opponent’s Active Pokémon. Boost that damage by poisoning your Hydreigon ex via either Pecharunt ex or Janine’s Secret Art and attaching Binding Mochi to Hydreigon ex. Take advantage of Dusclops or Dusknoir’s Cursed Blast Abilities, which drop either 5 or 13 damage counters on 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon, to either take multiple knockouts in a turn or to setup the numbers on a bigger knockout the same turn. When the opportunity presents, attach Neo Upper Energy and attack with Obsidian to deal 130 damage to your opponent’s Active Pokémon and to 2 of their Benched Pokémon.

BASIC STRATEGY

Using a combination of Earthen Vessel, Professor Sada’s Vitality, and Janine’s Secret Art, power up a benched Roaring Moon ex. Take Knock Outs, as appropriate, by using Roaring Moon ex’s Frenzied Gouging attack, which instantly Knocks Out your opponent’s Pokémon in exchange for Roaring Moon ex doing 200 damage to itself, Roaring Moon ex’s Calamity Storm, which does 100 damage plus 120 more if you discard a Stadium card in play, or Roaring Moon TEF’s Vengeance Fletching, which does 70 damage, plus 10 more damage for each Ancient card in your discard pile.

Evolve Dreepy up into Drakloak to take advantage of its Recon Directive Ability which lets you look at the top two cards of your deck, put one of those cards into your hand, and put the other on the bottom of your deck—or, use Rare Candy to evolve a Dreepy into a Dragapult ex and use its Phantom Dive attack, which does 200 damage and lets you put six damage counters on your opponent’s Benched Pokémon in any way you like.
